Temple University Hospital's Stroke Program has achieved national recognition for its high success rate in treating complex stroke patients.

Our medical team uses advanced imaging techniques to rapidly characterize a stroke and initiate life-saving treatment — whether it is thrombolytic therapy, emergency surgery or endovascular intervention.

We then smoothly transition patients into an appropriately customized rehabilitation program that includes:

• Speech, language and occupational therapy
• Psychological evaluations
• Social workers and pharmacists
• Assistance with home care and devices

Temple University Hospital is one of four Comprehensive Stroke Centers in the region, certified by The Joint Commission.

• Our Stroke Program cared for 575 stroke patients in 2023.
• At Temple University Hospital – Main Campus, 16% of ischemic stroke patients we intervened with intravenous clot-busting medication and 11% were treated with a thrombectomy procedure by using an intra-arterial clot retrieval device. This involves the physical removal of the blood clot from the blood vessel within the brain. For patients who arrived within hours of their symptom onset, treatment resulted in improved functional independent outcomes.
• For patients with brain aneurysms, Temple provides surgical clipping or intra-arterial coiling procedures.
• Procedures such as carotid endarterectomy, carotid stents and carotid angioplasty are performed to prevent a stroke or a reoccurring stroke by opening up blocked or narrowed arteries.
• 45% of our stroke patients were able to be discharged home while 32% were discharged to an acute rehabilitation facility.
