Jessica H. Beard, MD, MPH, FACS, Interim Trauma Program Medical Director and Director of Trauma Research at Temple University Hospital, spoke with WHYY about a new study from the Pew Charitable Trusts on homicide rates in Philadelphia and how they compare with other U.S. cities. In Philadelphia, homicide rates have fallen below pandemic-era levels and are nearing historic lows. Beard said the trend demonstrates a concerted effort to view gun violence from a public health perspective and address its root causes, and highlights an investment in community violence interventions and expansion of hospital-based violence intervention programs.
