Medscape interviewed Roh Yanagida, MD, PhD, FACS, Director of the ECMO Program at Temple University Hospital and Associate Professor of Surgery at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, about an abstract presented at the annual meeting of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT) which found that awake ECMO cannulation may offer a clinical advantage in bridging patients to lung transplant by avoiding the deleterious effects of intubation and mechanical ventilation, especially for elderly patients. Yanagida was one of the senior authors on the abstract.
